Understanding the Different Types of Lingerie

Yes, selecting a lingerie for a woman may get confusing considering there is a long list of types and styles to choose from. So to make the selection process easier, written below are descriptions of the common types of lingerie. Their purposes are also provided to help men find the appropriate pieces.

Brassier or bra

Demi-cup bras

These are otherwise known as shelf bras. Demi-cup bras support a woman’s breasts from underneath but do not cover the nipples. Demi-cup bras are useful for tops with very low necklines.

Maximizer bras

These are also called push-up bras and are used to improve the breast sizes of small-breasted women. Maximizer bras have either water filling or silicone pads that may be removed.

Minimizer bras

These are worn by women with large breasts to make them look smaller. Usually, minimizer bras are helpful for a woman when she is at work because the bras prevent male or female co-workers from getting distracted due to her well-endowed figure.

Underwired Bras

Used by women with large breasts, underwired bras have thin wires sewn underneath the cups. These support the breasts and hold them in place. Strapless bras with underwire are perfect for tube tops or strapless outfits.

Panties

Bikinis

These cover the front and rear completely. Bikinis also rest on the hips.

Boy short panties

These are similar to shorts but are tight-fitting and small. Boy short panties also cover more of the buttocks and the woman’s genitals.

Thong and g-string panties

Thong panties cover only the front and expose the buttocks through a thin stringy fabric. G-strings, on the other hand, are like thong panties but only use strings for the rear.

Tops

Baby doll and teddy nighties

Baby doll and teddy nighties are often made short with flowing and sometimes see-through fabric. There are also built-in cups that support the breasts in the baby doll and teddy nighties.

Bustier and corset

These cover the upper part of a woman’s body from the breasts down to the waist or hips. The bustier and the corset slim down the waist and push up the breasts. The lingerie can also be paired with thongs or g-strings.

Chemise

A chemise is like a night gown that has adjustable spaghetti-straps and that falls a few inches over the knees.

Peignoir

A peignoir is similar to a chemise but is as tight-fitting as a nightie. A peignoir is also very long, has a long slit on the sides and is paired with a robe or shawl.
